Greenland Bund Centre: A Landmark Mixed-Use Complex in Shanghai

Rongpu XU's Design Marries Historic Inheritance with Future Trends

Greenland Bund Centre, a mixed-use complex designed by Rongpu XU, is set to become a landmark in Shanghai's Financial Cluster Zone. The project draws inspiration from the historic Dongjiadu port, which launched Shanghai as a commercial center, and aims to preserve the integrity and social fabric of the area. The Centre is a testament to the highest values of contemporary society, offering a 24/7 environment with world-class office and residential towers, historic structures, retail, cultural, and public spaces.

The uniqueness of the Greenland Bund Centre lies in its design and functionality. The 127,000-sq.-meter site is destined to become an international model, reflecting the highest values of contemporary society. The complex, located on the South Bund of Shanghai, is a blend of the old and the new, with a focus on preserving the historic structures while introducing modern elements.

Working with industry, universities, research bodies, and technology companies, the project has produced several innovations. These include a high-performance composite structure, innovative structural state monitoring technology, and the first experimental site for a 5G integrated ecosystem. These technological advancements set the project apart from other mixed-use complexes.

The project began in September 2016 and is scheduled for completion in December 2022. The Class A office buildings were completed in March 2020, and the landmark tower is set to be completed in June 2022. The location of the project, No. 998, Zhongshan South Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, adds to its appeal and significance.

The design of the Greenland Bund Centre faced several challenges, including harmonizing the scale on site with the surrounding context. The design team aimed to create a 24/7 public environment that serves the functions of a modern financial center in a pedestrian space. They also aimed to create an urban landscape that attends both to history and development. A public space strategy was adopted to integrate the riverside and open space into the project.

The Greenland Bund Centre was awarded Silver in A' Construction and Real Estate Projects Design Award in 2021. The award is a testament to the project's top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable design that illustrates outstanding expertise and innovation. The design has been admired for its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence and introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
